As a first time visitor to Japan on a business trip, I asked my local office to book me into a real Ryokan, to getYo a feel for how the top-end Japanese take their short breaks. Gora Kadan is famed as one of Japan's finest countryside hotels, and I would not argue with that. It's about 2 hours from central... more

We stayed in a room with a private outdoor hot spring bath--definitely the best part! The shower (glass enclosed and steam fitted) was also located just outside our room on our private deck. It was wonderful! Our hostess was very attentive and gracious. The only sour note was the weird guy who checked us in and out. If I am... more

I'm not sure if the previous reviewer who trashed this inn has been to a Japanese ryokan before. The complaint about the lack of laundry facility(?) suggests probably not. Gora kadan is a classic upscale ryokan experience, restful and serene, with discreet and efficient service. It's not a bargain by any means but well worth it. more

In one night at this hotel, you can have a taste of every Japanese art: flower arranging, tea ceremony, massage, cuisine, calligraphy, incense, architecture, their harmony of ancient art and modern life, the traditional bath, both indoor and outdoor, and perfect, perfect hospitality. Compared to your plane ticket, the cost is a bargain. This is what you came for. You... more

This hotel belongs to Relais & Chateaux. This guarantees superb service, highest level, and high price too. There are only half a dozen such hotels in Japan. Two of our suites had large living/dinner rooms and very nice bedrooms. The bath was a real highlight. Large and very nicely decorated. The tub rectangular wooden and always overflowing into a gravel bed.... more

We stayed in the cheapest rooms and only available one. The food was the best we had the whole 2.5 weeks we were in Japan. I still dream about going back there. This is one of the few hotels I stayed in around the world I would go back to and recommend to anyone. more

We stayed in a standard room with an outdoor onsen. The property is gorgeous and very well located. The phenomenal Hakone Open Air Museum is a short distance and the Hakone Cable Car and Ropeway are less than five minutes away from the hotel. The hotel provides transportation to both but you can walk. Our room was very nice and... more

We had a wonderful stay in Gora Kadan. The whole experience was incredible from start to finish. We had booked room 107 which is a Kadan suite with a rock pool onsen. The room was beautiful and had 4 separate zones, a sleeping section, eating area, lounge and outside terrace. It was had a beautiful zen garden with the rock... more

11 of us stayed here for two nights in April. Gora Kadan met every expectation. Architecturally this small hotel is an exquisite gem, a wonderful mix of modern and traditional with sculpture and flower arrangements every where. There is an octagonal reading room cantilivered over the mountain with wonderful views of the surrounding hills, a large selection of books on... more
