After an amazing honeymoon we spent our last night here and it was a very disappointing experience. Although we were in the Keep Suite (which had an amazing terrace) the room was very dirty, there was no hot water (all day and night) and there was a live wire hanging from the lamp in the bedroom which we discovered after... more

Abosulutely amazing place. Stayed here in July 2008, having been overbooked in another hotel. We walked through the door hot and tired and essentially begged for a room. The receptionist was lovely, and explained they only had one room left and it wasnt their best one, nor was it made up. They showed us the room and it was lovely... more

We stayed in Hurumzi - formerly Emerson and Green- for one night/ 2 days following our safari and beach honeymoon. It was our last stop before heading home and I must say we were a little disappointed. Firstly, yes it is a very remarkable building and you can see clearly how the owners had tried to capture some kind of... more

My boyfriend and I stayed 2 nights here after our safari the week previously. We wanted to have a day and a half to look round Stone Town before moving on to our chosen beach resort in Zanzibar. 236 Hurumzi is in a good central location and is in fact quite an historical building used when slaves were freed after... more

I can't vouch for the other rooms in the hotel but I recently stayed in the 'ballroom', which was great fun. The hotel certainly does have character and we had no problem with cleanliness, etc. However, the rooms are by no means identikit, sanitized hotel rooms so it's probably realistic to expect a few kinks. Service, etc, was fine, no... more

We stayed in the Tour suite for 2 nights at the end of our honeymoon. The room was huge, very comfotable and elegant with a some stairs leading up to a private tea house complete with a sofa to lounge on and a swing. The views from the Tour suite are as good as the Roof Top Restaurant. We had... more

Hidden in the maze of alleys, you need to run the gauntlet of tourist touts and shops to reach it. Its worth it as the building is magnificent and opulent. Try to get your taxi driver to walk you down the alley to the hotel – ours did and doubled his modest tip. The beds rooms are beautiful, huge and... more

I expect that this place used to be excellent (as Emerson & Green), but it seems that the place has not had a good clean since the change in management. We booked here due to the fact that previous reviews stated that it was something completely different and a great experience which it maybe used to be... It is priced... more

Very beautiful hotel situated perfectly for exploring stone town. I stayed two nights in the West Room and thought it was the most unique and beautiful room Ive ever stayed. Walls were made of lattice with a small balcony. I didnt have air-con, but didnt feel I needed it (I was basically sleeping in the open air on a rooftop!),... more

We spent two nights of our honeymoon here and if it had been any longer we would have moved hotels. Perhaps it was damp bedroom which was far from clean. It is a shame because the Keep Suite could have been beutiful. The views from the roof terrace were stunning. But having to get into the damp rather smelly bed,... more
