Good comfort food. Tiny little place, packed to the gills, with only one waitress. A lot of locals, right on the water so a wonderful atmosphere. Had a bowl of great chowder and darn good burger. Prices where not bad at all for the location. Highly recommend it for lunch if you are strolling around the Old Port. more

Loved this local's hangout with the best oysters in town. No frills here, just good food and the best prices. Lobster roll was terrific and the chowder was so so good. We only stayed in Portland for 2 nites but ate at J's for 2 lunches...always crowded but worth it. Hands down, the best! more

J's is the best kept secret. It's in the heart of the Portland piers and the locals all hang out there. The oysters are as fresh as they can be. Prices can't be beat. Seating is limited but standing and taking in the local scene is great entertainment. Lobsters are awesome (get them in spring in particular!) and the experience... more

We were so looking forward to some freshly chucked oysters and instead we got a bunch of dried up oysters covered in a green film. I've got to say, I've never seen that on an oyster before and I sure hope I will never again. Highly disappointing. more

Reports are right on. $24.95 for 1 1/4# lobster including delicious corn on the cobb and a dozen little necks. A local dive, but really friendly waiters... Very comfortable. more

While traveling through Portland, I asked a bartender for a good place for seafood - not a tourist trap restaurant. The response was "J's - a place where all the locals go!" It was a great suggestion. Had raw oysters, clam chowder, and a bucket of little necks .... all excellent! They also have a nice beer selection & you'll... more

Very fresh lobster, probably one of the best I've eaten, and it's very reasonably priced. Great bar scene, a little bit noisy, and there aren't many tables inside. more

Our front desk girl, suggested it . "Local hang out, great food." Simple interioir , A few TVs. A bar in the center with tables all around it . Small, but served alot of people. The food was great. We had lobster, clam chowder and it was very good. Really enjoyed it more

For years we have talked about visiting Portland, Maine (the "other Portland" to us since we live in Portland, Oregon), just to see the difference. Finally made the trip. We asked at our hotel where we would find a true Maine seafood dinner and experience. J's was suggested to us and what a great suggestion that was!! Small, hole-in-the-wall, right... more

First of all this place seems to be always mobbed. We went dinner time around 6 pm on a Wednesday night. The staff does a great job managing the crowd and making sure customers are accomodated. HATS OFF TO THE BARTENDERS AND WAIT STAFF. I had the steamed lobster, could have been bigger. H had the crab legs, very good.... more
