Is Egypt Safe to Visit |
|
Hi I am thinking of going to Egypt on Honnymoon next year and I hear different reports that it may not be safe to visit. I would appreciate the opinions of people who have been there. Also any reccommendations people may have about best resorts places of interest etc |

Egypt is bery safe to visit ...we were there for 5 weeks this past summer. We had a really good time. All the tourist places are very secure with guards on the watch. I imagine you will be visiting Cairo...very crowded ...if you want a relaxing hotel..I highly recommend the Mirage Marriott..its a ways from downtown...but I feels like your on vacation...but if you would like to stay near downtown..there are many hotesl...I would recommend only five star hotles for their services and cleanliness. If you'r going to visit Sharm El Shiek I would recommend staying near Nama Bay...its alot of fun there ...that's where all the action is. We stayed at the Helnan Shepard which was decent..but there are nicer hotels in the area. Are you doing a cruise. There are many to choose from ...4 days is good... Enjoy your trip.

Ok first of all egypt is now VERY VERY safe to visit, crime is virtually non-existent, now to terrorism. In all areas especially tourist ares ther arfe Egyptian Tourism Police, these are heavily armed officers, you probably wouldn't walk 30 metres without bumping into one. Even all tour operators, arange their buses to depart at certain, times where they are escorted (along with other tour buses sometimes up to 150) by the tourism police in large convoys. The government sees the safety of tourists VITAL because it is egypt's number 1 industry. Now for where to go, I would pick a tour of all of egypt, such as Cairo, Sharm EL Sheikh, Alexandria, Luxor. YOu should find pretty good deals. But let my me tell you Sharm EL Sheikh is a MUST VISIT. A visit to egypt can never be complete without visiting Sharm El SHeikh. It is ideal for your honeymoon, with its exotic red sea beaches, and the dazzling resort, perfect for diving if you are a diver. Hope i helped ;)

I visited Egypt in September/October 2007 and felt quite safe there. To my knowledge, there is no significant threat that should stop a foreigner from traveling there. However, I would caution you to be prepared for the onslaught of begging for tips. In many touristy places, locals will offer to take a picture WITH you and then ask for money. Also, most public restrooms do not have toilet paper and there is an attendant handing some out at the door, for which you are, naturally, supposed to tip. My friends and I carried our own. When in markets and shopping areas near tourist attractions, be prepared for harrassment by shopkeepers trying desperately to sell their wares. Stand your ground and keep on moving. It can be very unnerving. Make sure you bring lots of dollar bills for tipping, when necessary. Frankly, it was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend Egypt to others!

My wife and I just spent ten days there for Thanksgiving, and I can't tell you that I've felt safer anywhere in the world. As someone said, there is a strong police presence everywhere and the hotels all make you go through metal detectors, etc. It's just the way it is. But the people were amongst the friendliest and warm-hearted we've come across. Loved the Egyptians and especially the Nubians in the south. If your interested in history and culture rather than just beaching and relaxing, start in Cairo, but then head down to Abu Simbel (must see; do whatever it takes to get there), Aswan, Luxor and back up the Nile to Cairo again. You'll never forget it. Totally safe.

We have just returned from a three week holiday in Egypt, where we have also visited and lived at various times over the last 30 years. As a result of the terrorist attacks aimed at tourists in the 1990s, the police now provide much more security to tourists than they used to. Almost all hotels now have metal detectors and armed guards at the door, and much road travel between centres can now only be undertaken in a convoy, under escort by police, which can be inconvenient. This all makes for a strong sense of security, although the constant reminders of police presence can be irksome at times. As for other safety issues, Egypt is still one of the safest countries to visit from the point of view of personal property. Theft and robbery are very rare in this devoutly Muslim country, although of course it always makes sense to take the normal precautions about the safety of your property. However, unaccompanied women, unfortunately, will get harassed to the point where it would be hard for them to enjoy themselves. As for places to visit, the big cities are bigger, more crowded and dirtier than ever, although there are so many amazing things to see in Cairo you simply must go there (hint: use the metro, it's clean, quick, cheap, efficient and not too crowded out of rush hour). For a honeymoon, I'd highly recommend a dahabbeyah cruise on the Nile between Aswan and Esna - these are gorgeous small sailing boats with cabins and facilities, and quite different from the giant diesel boats which ferry thousands of tourists backwards and forwards. When the wind is blowing, there's nothing more romantic than sailing (with real sails!) up the Nile. Our other highlight was the oasis of Siwa, which is hard to get to (8 hours by vehicle from Cairo), but away from the hordes, right on the edge of the spectacular Great Sand Sea. Unforgottable, with some charming places to stay in local traditional mud-brick style.

We just returned from a trip to Egypt. Cairo, Nile Cruise and Sharm el Shiekh. All went well. We enjoyed the mix of tourists that came from Europe, Russia, and N. America. Good food, lodging and travel. The tourist police are out in force and help make things go well. The tourists have to walk through metal detectors to get to the pyramids and all other tourist areas, but it is worth it. There is very little hassle. Enjoy some good weather and culture.

Just remember to not leave your wife alone at any time. It is very unsafe for a woman traveling alone.

I too, am thinking of going to Egypt. When you say unaccompanied women are in danger, what if you go with another woman? I don't have a husband to guard me! Also, I am Jewish. Does that matter? sdavis
