Curious about the "Hand Grenade". Should I try it?

I have never tried it. Corn syrup and cheap liquor doesn't sound good to me. It seems to be popular with "tourists" and young kids getting hammered. I would bet a lot of hand grenades end up back on Bourbon St. through regurgitation.

I would skip it. There are so many other great drinks to sample.

If you get tired of Bourbon St., head downriver to Frenchmen St. for a more local scene of music clubs and bars. The blocks between Royal and Decatur have 6 music clubs.

Do not skip it. I am not sure why someone would advise you to do so without having tried it first but to each his own. It has a Melon flavor and hides the alcohol taste pretty well. Have no doubt there is a lot in there. It is a sweeter drink but if you like melon flavor, you should give it a try. If you don't want to go in they have to-go bars off Bourbon. Just be careful with them. The two Tropical Isle locations have a Jimmy Buffett vibe to them. If you can catch the Hand Grenade guy out front of the Bourbon/Orleans location, he can be kind of funny to watch. I will agree these have probably lead to many a lost supper.

HAND GRENADE > HURRICANE (imho)

They taste very un-booze like, which as a girl, and someone who hasn't acquired a taste for beer yet, it's perfect. It's really cold, looks like weird slime thing and tastes like melon. I am a big fan of those "bacardi razz/melon" drinks you can buy (since freshman year of college baby!) at giant eagle or wherever, and a lot of people think they are too sweet and make their stomach hurt, but I say try em.

I think Hurricane are good, don't get me wrong, but hand grenades are definitely my favie and worth trying. Just don't knock it till you try it. I think you can even order the mix online if you want to try it before you get down there. We took some home with us for our friends, and we had a blast. Although when hasn't alcohol and 20 somethings mixed been a blast?

Porc- you gotta try em!

Also, I have definitely seen more hurricanes end up back on the street than hand grenades.

I actually saw a girl throw up red hurricane all over those cheesy t- shirts in a store. Then she threw up while I was in line trying to buy a scarf...all over the register...lol the guy working didn't even wince, he must be used to it!

as a drinker, i was always kind of a heavy hitter and these knocked me down, the reason being that they're insidious... as tanya mentioned, you don't really take into account how much alcohol you're consuming 'cause it just tastes like punch. i think it has grain alcohol. it's a good "starter drink" if the goal is utlimately to BE drunk. I don't like the taste, personally (i like hurricanes better flavor wise) but in my drinking days, I was all about the most liquor for your money., these will mess you up eventually. i never see the hand grenade guy anymore. it's so stupid that he exists, that it's awesome.

I think due to the heat the hand grenade guy is limited on his appearances. It definitely depends on who is in the suit. Some guys just stand there and wave but one day there was a guy in it that must have just punded ten red bulls. He was dancing, climbing the poles and hopping all around. It was too funny.

I used to have Mardi Gras parties and we always ordered hand grenade mix. To make them you need mix, grain alcohol and water. Sadly I left the mixing up to a friend the second year and he accidentally doubled the grain alcohol amount. I didn't notice until I finished my first one and I was already feeling a bit loopy. I asked him about it and when I discovered what happened I had to water them down a bit.

The other post from Pauliewalnuts entitled fun for 30 somethings has some more good recommendations on local drinks like the Pimm's Cup at Napoleon House, a Mint Julep or Sazerac. You can get Absinthe too now.

The absinthe is the new version right? I think the old version is still banned in the states
