I stayed at Sandals Whitehouse from June 16 - June 21, and it was my first experience at an all inclusive resort. Typically I enjoy vacations where I can sample some of the local restaurants and get away from the hotel grounds when I can, but since Sandals was offering a good package, I tried Whitehouse and was generally pleased with the experience there. I based my trip destination on TripAdvisor reviews and I swear by them when picking a location/hotel. I am well traveled so my comments will reflect on how I usually spend my time in foreign places.
Arrival/Bus Trip: MBJ Airport was easy to navigate and obviously they are used to loads of tourists so security/customs were professional and fast. After meeting in the Sandals arrival lounge the porters load your bags into the minibus for the 90 minute trip to Whitehouse. The porters expect to be tipped as they are not affiliated with Sandals. I found the ride to the resort fantastic. I'm not faint of heart, and to be honest, as hard as Sandals will try, what you will see is the reality of rural Jamaican life. I get that some travelers are queasy, airsick, tired, and want to get to the resort ASAP. My advice? Enjoy it. Most travelers will feel out of their element, but that is what going somewhere is all about. After all, you didn't pick Florida. The Jamaican people are beautiful and hard-working. Watch them go about their day and wonder about their lives living here. I also tipped my driver $15 for the ride, he was appreciative, but others did not tip. I wasn't sure but it felt appropriate given he ensured our safety and the length of the trip.
Grounds: The area is beautiful. Sandals owns a large piece of property here and they take great care of it. There appears to be a small army of grasscutters, hedgers, planters, landscapers always at work. The backdrop of the mountains really gives you the feeling you are away from it all, and geographically, you really are.
Rooms: Large, clean, and very comfortable. Cable TV, DVD players, stocked fridges everyday, good size deck. I found the bed to be a little on the hard side, but not overwhelmingly so.
Food: Hit or miss. I love to eat well whenever I travel but at times it was a struggle here. The produce was fantastic, always fresh, especially at the breakfast buffet at Bayside which was a highlight. Ditto for Cafe Paris. I think some of the prepared foods were a spot off, nothing was inedible, but from time to time I'd eat something that didn't sit right (and I don't eat seafood). Going into this vacation I half expected that so I'm not that disappointed by it. Given the climate and resort location, I think it's unrealistic to expect top quality in every meal selection. Ironically the best meal I had was on the private dinner for two (on the beach); def. try to spring for that, it's worth the cost.
Service: Before coming here I read some reviews where people were disappointed with the service. Everyone has their own experience, and I found the people here to be outstanding. That being said, did every employee I pass on the grounds say hello to me? No. Did 75% of people here stop what they were doing (carrying luggage, pulling weeds, washing tile) to say hello and make eye contact with me? In 95 degree heat? Yes. I talked to a lot of the employees here and I was generally interested in learning about their lives. Many people who work at the resort live all over Westmoreland (the parish) and many of them live in the towns that we drove through to get there. Some live farther away. They work six days a week, earning minimum wage, but cannot receive any tips for service. Many can't afford automobiles, let alone gas prices, so have to take the bus, ride bikes, or walk. There aren't a ton of options for good employment other than tourism here, so Sandals provides them with employment stability. Collectively their careers are based on all aspects of giving rich people a nice vacation (we're all rich to them). My advice on service? Take it in stride. The very few who won't say hello or engage you in conversation I doubt are being rude; most days don't we all just want to do our job and go home? Don't not pick this resort because of poor service reviews, the people really are wonderful and are always working hard to make that place perfect for you.
Business: Sandals brand obviously runs a good business. It looked a little quiet there, I thought the bad economy was a result, but someone told me they were 90% filled but the resort is so big it never looks crowded. The shops are stocked, with some good bargains on T-shirts, hats etc. I was interested in buying some new music but was turned off by $30 CD prices in the store. One thing to note: Some very friendly photographers canvass the resort and take random pictures of couples. When you go to the photo shop to maybe purchase them, they are staggeringly expensive. I got 4 simple 5" X 7" prints made and it cost me over $60. The receipt said $16 per photo. Too late to do anything so I was upset at myself for not checking, so maybe I can help someone else out!
In Closing: The place is really spectacular, the pools and beach were great. It was a perfect place to chill out for a few days and have "no worries." I'm not sure if I would return to this resort, not because I didn't like it, but I don't think I'm really into all inclusive after all. I would def. come back to Jamaica, but I want more of a cultural bonanza than what I got here.
