I stayed at Schlosshotel Kronberg one night on March 29, 2007. The rate was 180,-- Euro tax and service included, breakfast was available for additional 21,-- Euro. Important: Do not book via Leading Hotels, the rates are always more expensive (cheapest rate was 206,-- Euro excl. breakfast), check the hotel internet site or book via ---.de.
The impressive castle of the Hessian princely house is nestled in the middle of a private park with integrated golf course and 18km away from downtown Frankfurt. The property is furnished with antiques and artwork of the Prince of Hesse, the public areas and rooms are a bit dated but overall still acceptable and clean.
The service is very good: prompt doorman service and luggage transfer at arrival, fruits and choclate in the room, free minibar, free newspaper in the morning, complimentary shoe shine overnight, turn down service and enough service staff. Even details like ice cubes in a seperate box on the table or a card with the weather forecast on the bed fullfill highest standards.
The food and beverage concept could be better : a real plus is Jimmy's bar with live piano music in a cosy atmosphere; more a minus is the overpriced hotel restaurant. The only restaurant in the hotel offers a good and reliable kitchen but is not a gourmet restaurant what the pricing will suggest: 3 course menu 58,-- Euro, 6 course menu 98,-- Euro, soups 15,-- Euro, main courses from 28,-- Euro and desserts from 14,-- Euro. Too much for a regular hotel restaurant (no michelin star/ 13 from 20 points at Gault Millau), annoying, when there are no alternatives. The main course ("Waller") was a little portion, as told solid cooked but not michelin level and not enough for a hungry business traveller.
Until november 2006 there was for many years a special indulgence menu available: 3 course menu with wine, water and coffee for 48,-- Euro. This was value for money (now you pay around 80 Euro for the same).
Tip: The sister hotel of the Hessian princely house in downtown Frankfurt ("Hessischer Hof", also member of Leading Hotels) offers at the restaurant Sevres the mentioned menu even for 34,-- Euro. The Hessischer Hof has the same service level, renovated rooms and nice interiors with antiques and also Jimmy's Bar (voted best hotel bar in Frankfurt for years and Top 10 bars in Germany), but not comparable surroundings and exteriors.
