New Yorkers (2 adults traveling with a 14-month old) visiting DR for the first time and stayed at Sun Village Resort & Spa in last week of May 2008

Hi All,

only because I had read a lot of the reviews about this resort before I booked and after I bookeThis is actually the first time I'm writing a review, but figured it's worth writing -d. I thought the reviews were mixed and now I know why. I actually had buyer's remorse after I booked it, but stuck with it (even though I had a few days left to cancel without penalty) despite being nervous about all the warnings about the stairs and steps throughout this resort. I'll share with you my expectations /concerns prior to our travel and then the reality.

Price/Value:
I checked numerous websites incl. Trip advisor to determine what this resort generally goes for - and I thought I got a steal when I booked it with bookit.com for almost $500 less than what I would have paid thru Expedia. So this alone was an incentive to book this resort. The reality is that I think we got more or less what we paid for for a standard room, it's not much, but if you factor in the fact that it's all inclusive and we roughly paid$150/night for 2 persons, that's not bad. I wasn't quite sure if this was a 3 star or 4 star resort and I've seen it mixed it various websites. My opinion, definitely not a 4 star. Maybe it was rated a 4 star for the resort grounds. I would rate it a 3 star, my husband would rate it a 2 star.

The Standard Room:
It's clean, but I kept getting a sense that we should have upgraded. We requested more kleenex and water (they give you 4 bottles/day), but we got neither, so I think that's their protocol, however, I had to wonder if we had stayed in the superior or higher tiered rooms, would the person servicing our room have declined or ignored our request. More towels would have been nice since we practically showered about 3x/day - however, I think that was too much to ask.
I would recommend that if you can fit it into your budget, try to go for a superior room instead of the standard. Also, note that the standard room (as this is the only one I can vouch for), has tiled floors, not ideal for toddlers who are still wobbling around as they walk, our toddler fell on her head several times - she's OK. On the good side, they do service your room upon a telepone call - as we slept in late one day, and called mid day to get it serviced, and they sent someone over right away. I still wish they would have given us more tissue and toilet paper as my husband and daughter were both under the weather and had used up all the tissue/toilet paper daily supply - so you would think the cleaning lady would have figured to provide extra.

The resort grounds
This was really nice and well kept, there was always someone working and cleaning and grooming. It was pleasant to be surronded by this landscape and resort. The BIG Negative which was my biggest fear since I was traveling with a 14-month old - is that there are a lot of stairs (NO JOKE) - - I would strongly recommend if you have infants, toddlers, strollers, elderlies, members who need walking canes or wheel chairs, to really seek out another resort, this one is not for you. This is the best advise I can give. No matter where you turn, you will come across stairs and steps or steep inclines and declines. The designer/architect really should have invested in elevators and have handicap/accessibility in miind, to encourage repeat visitors.

The Pools:
This was another plus, very clean and plentiful, one for each family member. Kids will love the slide and some of the waterfalls they have in several pools. My daughter loved the one by the Oasis bar (which I called the main one) - because she met a lot of other vacationers there - she's a little social bug. *Also, note, that we were there from Tues - Sat, and the place was like a ghost town, there were maybe no more than 10 people in the pool at a time (per pool), I spoke to a worker down by the beach and they had explained that May is their low season and it's like that till about October sometime. So on the one hand, if you want a resort all to yourself, this is a good time to go. A negative about the pool area, there never seems to be enough of the blue pool towels to go around.

The Restaurants:
OK at best. I think that was what I had expected based on the reviews. Citrus: was our first dinner, didn't like it, the pace was too slow for us, considering we have a 14-mo. old. The food was not all that great considering that we had to wait such a long time for each course and there weren't that many of us to begin with dining at the same time. The staff was very pleasant.
Lemongrass: our second and third dinner - as you can see, since we went back a second night - we liked this place for dinner. One course quickly followed the next as we were done, which is more of our speed. The food was tasty and hot (temperature), so everything was very delightful to our surprise. The staff was excellent.
The buffet: we ate there for all breakfasts and lunches during our stay and ate dinner there one night (seafood night) - the buffet is OK, but the only reason why we kept going back because it felt as if this was our only choice for breakfast and lunch. The food was more on the cold or room temperature side as it seems as if it was sitting there for a while. I think this may be because of the low season syndrome. Whenever we ate something that was hot or warm, my husband and I would make a point of telling each other. I very much enjoyed the smoothies I had every morning at the buffet and the fresh fruits - loved the papayas.
The Sonora cafe was closed during our entire stay for maintenance -so no comment. This unfortunately, limited our choices to the three I mentioned above for dining options.

The Beach:
we didn't even bother, since it seemed so deserted with it being 'low season' - but the beach reminded me more of Coney Island or Jones Beach and not the blue/green that I've come to associate "The Carribean" to be.

The Spa:
I enjoyed my experience at the spa and would recommend this - I felt this was more upscale and delightful- it's a shame I didn't get to take it in for the whole day.

The Staff:
The staff was very pleasant, specifically in the dining places. I didn't find the front desk to be particularly helpful. The gentlemen at the front that greet you when you arrive are very pleasant and helpful. I was under the impression (through my travel agent, reading expedia.com, and word of mouth from other vacationers) that there are free shuttles to Ocean World (one of the reasons why I booked this resort), but when I asked the concierge, she replied no. Additionallly, when we asked one of the gentleman in the front area, on our last full day, about a shuttle, he also did not volunteer any information about times, and if there was a free shuttle or not, and as we were trying to get this information, a 'taxi guy' came over since he had overheard our interest in going to Ocean World, offered to take us there and then some. We opted to go his way, since the staff member we were speaking too, at this time, was slowing stepping away from us as to give the taxi guy room to do his pitch. We were sold and we actually don't have any reqrets - it was quite enjoyable. We paid him $25/pp RT to take us to Puerta Plata - where we visited the Rum Factory, we drove by Ocean World, visited a couple of souvenir shops, jewelry shops, the Fort, the Church, etc, and saw the heart of Puerto Plata. Ate lunch at a place he had recommended, it was quite good. We wrere the only customers there - again, "low season syndrome" This taxi guy - turned out to be our personal tour guide for 1/2 day while another person was behind the wheel - which is a good thing as the driver really needs to focus on the road.

Our main gripe about how 'tourists' are treated in DR/Puerto Plata:
It really started to bug us how we started to feel that we were getting 'ripped' or that everyone around us was trying to make some quick and big 'tip.' The moment we landed, we had to pay for a tourist visitor tax $10/pp, which we also had to pay for our 14-mo. old. Then we had gotten one of the carts to help us manage our luggages, my husband was pushing this while I was pushing the stroller. The minute we got to the exit area, we saw our 'man with the sign for our airport shuttle' - he told us to follow him, and then another man, literally, grabbed the cart out of my husband's hand, as he was going to help us to where our shuttle was parked - even though we obviously didn't need his help - anyway, my husband, had to tip him $20, because he didn't have any small bills and he was asking for one. Then our shuttle guy, who I thought was our driver, turns out to be a guy, that was only going to direct us to where the shuttle was parked to pick up passengers, he loaded the bags into the van and stuck his hand out for a tip after we were seated, at that time, I had already given my husband some small bills and my husband, gave him a few singles, and he said he wanted more, I think he finally put his hand away after my husband gave him another $5, all that time, he was staring at my husband's $50 that just happened to be the bill that was wrapped around the smaller bills. He then told us that we had to tip the driver. *Note, our driver, turns out to be the only guy, that was hungry for tips - at least he didn't ask for one, but of course, we did tip him. I will give it to the resort staff for not being pushy or aggressive when it came to tipping, so that made it a much more comfortable stay. When it was time for us to leave DR, the JetBlue counter person told me that I had to pay $12 to add the baby info. into her system, since my 14-mo. old was traveling on my lap - is this bogus or what! She probably pocketed the money. Oh, prior to reaching the counter, we were again hounded by an airport porter and the same guy who I originally thought was the shuttle guy, to help us out with our bags, we tried to say no, but they insisted, they are very persistent, as they will literally reach for the handle of your bags. So we gave in, but seriously, we didn't need both of them. After the baggage scan area, the 'pseudo' shuttle guy tells my husband that we have to tip the porter $20, my husband had already planned to tip him - so he did give him that amount. The pseduo shuttle guy followed us to the jetblue counter and wanted to follow us to the point before entering the bldg, but my husband kept saying 'we got it from here' especially, because we had only one carry on. He then told my husband to give him a tip - and my husband said he had already given his share to the porter - but again he stuck his hand out, so my husband gave him a few $ and told him to go back to the other guy to get his $5. When we got to the gate, we saw that there was a booth that said "Departure tax" - you have got to be kidding - but, of course given our experience throughtout our trip, this has become an expectation, but to our surprise, we didn't have to pay, since we were flying jetblue, so I do feel sorry for those who were flying American or Delta, because these folks did have to pay a departure tax, I think it was between $10 - $20/pp. So all this tipping requirement vulterous-style, left a bad taste in our mouths about the people and culture of the land as I can see most tourists would probably feel the same way - no one likes to be hounded.

The weather was very nice - it did not rain or storm while we were there!
One other plus I did want to point out was that there's a Kids Club which states for ages 4 and up. However, my daughter visited there for 1 hr and she was the only one there with the attendant and she had a great time.

If I left anything out worth mentioning, I will repost.

Hope you enjoy your stay at Sun Village or another resort at DR.

Our hotel grounds are truly spectacular. We have plentiful land, natural flora, and an amazing landscape at Sun Village Resort & Spa! We are thrilled this guest gave such a great review of our property. We are currently upgrading our rooms and the process is done in increments as we have to work around reservations. Still, all rooms are pristine and in good condition. We do have many stairs. The resort is built simulating small hills. The steps are part of the character of the resort.

Extra water bottles and tissue are definitely available and easy to replenish. It seems there was a disconnect on this. In the future to this guest and others, please call the operator as this is something our Express Service will handle within 10-minutes; the same goes for the additional toilet paper and towels. Housekeeping keeps a look out and replenishes items that may be running low but if you would like additional supplies, please let us know. We try to stay as environmentally-friendly as possible here. The 3-towel use did not signal a need for more towels. Please let us know if you would like more towels. If it looks as if you too plan to reuse it we do not touch it.

While May isn’t our high season we are busy with many reservations. We have multiple pools, restaurants, a state-of-the-art spa, excursions, and many other happenings both on and off-property that make the people seem scarce. Many of our guests seek a relaxing experience and Sun Village delivers that peace of mind in a beautiful and exotic destination with little interruptions. Here you will always find a “perfect spot” by a pool or a seat with a view at one of our restaurants.

Our menus are varied and our cuisine is exquisite. Should the pace of one restaurant not suit your mood for the day or evening, please visit another or let us know how we can make your experience the best possible. We find guests dining at Citrus seek a less rushed dining experience where those at Malibu tend to want a quick and delicious meal. The Lemongrass food should be hot. It sometimes shares its buffet with The Malibu restaurant but the food is made and replenished immediately and kept hot with special burners.

As far as the pool towels… they’re there. We set up poolside chaise lounges and chairs with blue towels continuously throughout the day. Should you require more towels please visit our little towel kiosk by the lobby pool or ask at the front desk and the towels will be made available to you.

Our sandy beach is blue and tranquil. We do have waves, good for wind sailing and water sports yet our tide is calm. It’s a shame these guests didn’t visit the beach… we have enormous chaise lounges by the beach, perfect for reading a book while tanning. There is a flamingo sanctuary nearby. There is also a bar on the beach, named in honor of Lovewrecked, a movie that was filmed on our beach, starring Amanda Bynes.

Our front desk is usually the most helpful location as it tends to be the go-to place for most questions. There is no shuttle to Ocean World as it is at the end of our property. There is no street to cross or anything, you just walk from our resort down a winding road and you arrive in Ocean World; maybe a 10-minute walk, if that. You could ask a taxi to take you since they are on the property at all times in case a guest wishes to use its services.

The costs for entering/departing the country and for tipping at the airport are outside of our control. We do know there are fees associated with travel to and from the Dominican Republic and it is customary to tip; please bring small bills. We are similar to other countries in this way yet our pay scale is much different—a few dollars here will stretch a long way.

Thank you for your visit.

“loved the service”

Sun Village Resort & Spa Cofresi

I have been to may resorts and some with a much higher star rating the hotel staff was so attentive to our needs. I was never as pleased with such service as I was here. The beach is not what I expected but the hotel has so many pools and recreation areas that I did not miss the beach at all. Loved the place highly recommend I will go back as soon as I can. travelers from Miami

We stayed at Sun Village May 17th thru May 19th, 2008. Our daughter was married at the beautiful Gazebo on the beach. We have nothing but praise for this resort. Our superior room was very clean and comfortable. The maid service is great always keeping the room clean and providing any extra's we needed such as extra water for our refrigerator or extra towels. The food was wonderful at all the restaurants and yes we did try them all. The resort grounds were so well kept and the flowers just beautiful. In my opinion the one thing I would say about this resort is the service was top rate. Everyone was friendly and helpful. This was our first trip out of the states and we had a great time.
Truly wonderful memories for us, my daughter and new son-in-law.

“Very Relaxing Vacation”

Sun Village Resort & Spa Cofresi

May 28, 2008
2/2 found this review helpful

My wife and I have just returned from 1 week at the Sun Village Resort and Spa in Cofresi outside of Puerto Plata. We stayed from May 20 through May 27 in a Spa room, and had an overall very pleasant experience.

Booking:
We booked our trip through Skyauction after winning a good price for a superior room/all inclusive package. After reading the reviews, we got a bit skeptical, having never been to the DR before or used skyauction, so we called the resort directly and upgraded to a spa room before arriving. We also booked our pickup/transer through sky tours, the travel/excursion agency on-site at the resort.

Arrival:
We flew into Puerto Plata on a sunny day 92 degrees and humid. This was the typical weather for the whole week. We had two rainstorms on the trip, both in the late afternoon and short-lived. Our transfer was waiting for us and we had a very nice ride through puerto plata in an air-conditions SUV, one of the nicer cars on the road. Junior, our driver was very friendly, had beverages waiting for us in the car (beer, soda and water) and gave us a tour through Puerto Plata on the way to the resort, which is on the other side of town. While the airport is small, I recommend flying into Puerto Plata - it's a short drive compared to Santa Domingo.

Check--in/Lobby/Room:
Check-in went very smoothly, despite our complicated booking, they had the right room ready for us, in 203, and had a golf cart ready in minutes to take us to the room. The lobby, as with the rest of the resort, is immaculate and beautiful. We had a quick drink at the oasis bar at the main pool then took a trip to the room. I highly recommend building 203. I think the spa rooms are some of the best on the property. You have full use of the spa, which is amazing, a modern, upgraded room, decent pressure, a flat screen tv and nice balcony with adirondack furniture. We looked over the spa, down the hill to the ocean from our balcony. It was an outstanding view. The fridge was always restocked with beer, soda and water, everyday (part of the all-inclusive package) and the towels were always wonderfully arranged and plentiful. We had none of the flooding issues described in some of the previous posts - and we had 1 major rainstorm while we were there.

Spa:
When you stay in the spa room you have full use of the pool, 3 jacuzzis, shower and steam room. It's well wort the extra 18/night per person. The pool is amazing - tranquil and rarely used. This was our favorite pool, and they are all quite nice. the showers have the best pressure t the resoort and the service is excellent. Overall, we thought te service was fantastic, but Pablo, the main attendant at the spa went above and beyond. We felt truly pampered. We each had a massage. It was expensive, much more so than at the spa we normally go to, but fantastic. Veronica is gifted.

Other Pools:
The beach pools were fun - there were always activities and they had loungers half in the water - which was pretty neat. The main pool by the lobby is fantastic - with a bar on the top level. We spent less time here, becuase we had the spa pool - but I really liked it. The dolphin pool is also nice, with a handy juice bar and pool tables near by. I fully agree with the posters in the past - the pools are the shining star of the resort.

Food:
This was our first all-inclusive. BTW - don't get the european package. there are not many restaurants in the immediate area, and the only way to use any of the restaurants is through the all-inclusive package. The food was overall, good. I don't think one should expect haute cuisine in the DR, since so much needs to be brought to the island. We ate at all the open restaurants (Sonora, the mexican restaurant was closed). THe resort was half-full. May is the slow season, so we did not need reservations. We really liked lemongrass - ate there 3 times for dinner - the teppenyaki is very good. Citrus was nice - it's air conditioned. Great antipasto bar, good meats. Malibu, the main buffett where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served was hit or miss. Dinners were always themed. As a rule, I didn't think the pasta was very good at any of the restaurants, howerver, the grilled meat was always fantastic. Anything with beans or plantains was also fantastic. I tended to shy away from the sushi, pasta and pizza. The highlight for me, was Dominican night at Malibu. Overall - I liked the food. I also thougt the Santo Domingo coffee they served was excellent. Both at the table and in the espresso machines...don't ask for decaf..all they have is sanka...

Bars:
I'm not picky with drinks. MOst of the rum drinks were made ith Brugal, the local brew - that was fine with me. My favorite was the Beach bar, becuas it was always cooler at the beach. The music was a bit repetitive, but the bartenders were very friendly, and there was something tranquil about being able to watch the waves crash in while having a drink....

Service:
Overall - the service was an A. The staff at the resort was fantastic. Very friendly, and always ready with an "Ola" Pablo at the spa was particularly noteworthy.

Beach:
So-so. We aren't beach people. We like to walk, hear the waves come in and lay out in the sun. The guys on the beach were great, though. There was always volleyball, toss and other games to keep us busy - I suspect, that its more fun when the resort is fuller.

Sky Tours/Excursions:
We did the city tour and oceanworld. the former is a waste of money, the latter is OK, but expensive. It was neat to swim with dolphins, but ultimately, the cost was quite high. The casino looked nice, but we aren't gamblers. Most of the other excursions didn't appeal to us.

Night Life:
Pretty much none. The staff shows were OK. The club was kind of empty. I suspect it's better when its full.

Layout:
Puerto Plata is lush, a city on a tropical, hilly coast. The resort is built into a hillside. There are amazing vistas, fauna and views all over the large resort. There are also a large nubmer of steps. It is very hot everywere except on the beach, so bring sunblock, and prepare to spend muc time in the pools.

Net:
We would highly recommend the resort for those that are looking for 5 days of getting away from it all. 7 if you like horseback riding/dune buggies or are with a large group of friends. As a whole, I don't think there's much to do in Cofresi-so it is not for those looking for a real "nightlife", as it's a 35 dollar cab ride anywhere elese.

“Splendid Sun Village experience”

Sun Village Resort & Spa Cofresi

May 28, 2008

FANTASTIC! I've just come back from a week's holiday at Sun Village and am intending to book next year's holiday as soon as I can! From the minute I stepped onto the resort I was made to feel so welcome by the staff, who are all extremely polite and attentive. My accommodation was wonderful - no complaints at all. Large rooms, great maid service, fully functioning air-con and safe. The pools are all maintained throughout the day to a very high standard. The activity staff are very friendly and if you're interested in participating in the fun - it's a great break from the hot sun! The food is good - there is plenty of variety at the buffet - just make sure you have a good look around before you chose! Service in the al a carte restaraunts can be a little laid back - but then who is in a hurry! The BBQ at the beach is a great alternative for lunch followed by a walk along the beach and some beach volley ball if you're up for it. All in all I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to everyone and I think the fact that people return again and again speaks volumes. Go and have a fabulous time!
