We just left the resort and we have had the most wonderful time. The resort has its issues, but there are a few things you can do which, I believe, may make the difference between and great stay and a so-so one –
1 – you MUST rent a car at the airport!!! The only disgruntled guests we met were those who did not rent a car and thus felt trapped by the high restaurant prices. You will pay about the same for a week’s car rental as you will for the shuttle to and from the hotel for 4 people (no joke), and yes, it is $15/night for self park and $20 for valet but you will make that up and MORE with one meal eaten outside the resort every other day. That doesn’t include the savings on tours (a lot more expensive if the hotel shuttles you back and forth) and the fun of exploring this island.
2 – you should register with Wyndham rewards program – not only did we get a great deal, but they left us a note saying they upgraded us to an ocean view room b/c we were in the rewards program and we got a welcome amenity of sodas and fresh fruit. They have a great summer special with a VIP discount card included which was a great deal (stay 2 nights and get 2 free)
The hotel itself is, as many other guests have commented, beautiful on the outside but a little worn on the inside – nothing terrible and the main thing for me, is that it was not dirty, just a little worn (scuff marks on the walls, some stains on the carpet in the hallway etc) but really, it did not detract from our vacation at all. The staff is WONDERFUL and eager to please and the food was all fine, but we didn’t eat at the resort a whole lot b/c there were so many interesting and cheaper options within minutes. The prices in the sit down restaurants are high as are the drinks, but the 2 outdoor cafes (Seabreeze and the Tiki Hut) had sandwiches around $10-12 which is what you would expect at any resort. Our favorite places to eat off the hotel grounds were – (all are 5 min away or less and all served PR food)
La Parilla – on Luquillo beach – this was the best meal we had. Not a real kiosk though, it is a sit down restaurant with entrees mostly in the $20 range but FANTASTIC.
Any kiosk on Luquillo Beach – they serve similar but oh so good food. The four of us ate dinner for $15!! There are not that many other places in the world where you can safely eat “street food”.
Antojito’s – at the turnoff to the hotel – friendly, inexpensive (entrees $10 or less) and breezy.
Ritchie’s – up on the hill, romantic, spectacular view, Ritchie comes by all the tables. Not cheap - entrees $20-30 but worth it for the whole experience
We also did so many great day trips, hiking to La Mina Falls at El Yunque, taking a 2 hour trail ride at Hacienda Carabali (5 min from resort) where you swim in a river half way through the ride – ($60/adult), a snorkel trip with Spread Eagle II ($70 adults, $50 kids) and then we spent two days at the hotel boogie boarding and playing in the pool (boogie boards were AWESOME fun - $15 for the day). We elected to rent a cabana to get guaranteed shade and we were very pleased. It was a splurge but worth it with a cooler full of sodas and water, chips, cookies and in the afternoon, a plate of fresh cut up fruit. You can get a cabana on the beach or at one of the pools, I think beach is a lot better, you are on a platform with a spectacular view of the ocean with your own hammock. We also spent our last night at El Convento Hotel in Old San Juan – whether you stay the night or just go for the day, OSJ is not to be missed.
Back to the resort, the beach was lovely with just the right amount of waves, our room was an OK size and comfortable, we had a lovely view of the pool and ocean. We used the kids club once and even though it was just a single room, our 5 and 10 yr old stayed one night 5-9pm and LOVED it. The pool was large and well maintained and there was a fun, short slide. The concierges were sweet but useless, I felt like I knew more about the area than they did! Do your research first and you will not need them. Also, as other reviewers have advised, go over your bill carefully. There were 5 mistakes on mine, but they were all corrected with a minimum of hassle.
We loved our stay, felt it was worth every penny but I would advise you to look for deals, esp in summer (we paid around $200/night b/o discounts, this does not include the $40 something resort fee/night) and I need to say it again – RENT a car! Staff is truly wonderful and anything some employees may lack in competence, they make up for in true effort and friendliness. We are so sad to leave!
