This is one gorgeous hotel. The grounds are breathtaking!
We were greeted after a 16-hour journey with immediate curbside service to park the car and take our bags. While we checked it we were presented with leis, fresh juice, and cool towels - lovely! The bellman was very friendly and gave us tips on the hotel and things to do in Maui.
I just don’t understand the few reviews saying this hotel was rundown?! How could you possibly say this hotel was rundown? I saw no evidence of anything worn, broken ,or old? I don’t know where these people are used to staying but I’d like to stay there!
We stayed in the north section, room #617. I liked the room layout. Our kids (9&12) were with us so having a separate bedroom was a must. The furniture looked new and nice, as did the bedding, the carpet, etc. The bathrooms are very nice (huge & marble) as was the lanai. I loved our view, even though it wasn't oceanfront I think I preferred it because you could see the ocean one-way and Haleakala the other. And it was quite, no pool noise or conference people noise. We ate breakfast out there almost every day to the sounds of the birds.
I really can’t imagine spending extra for an ocean-view room. We found we were hardly ever in our room. We’d normally be up and out by 7:30 or 8 to enjoy the cooler morning and wouldn’t be back until after sunset (which is ~6 pm). I would rather have the extra $200+ a day for an ocean front room to spend on eating out and other activities (spa, helicopter, etc.)
The only drawback to the room was the beds. The sleep sofa wasn't comfortable (most aren't) but the king wasn't much better. Didn't bother us too much until we moved later in the week to the Westin and slept on the Heavenly Bed to compare. The beds were MUCH better at the Westin. (And the Westin doesn't charge $30 a night for a rollaway as does the Fairmont. They provide a rollaway Heavenly Bed for free - our 12 yr old liked that after the sleeper sofa.)
Pools were great and the kids loved every minute. And the beach was wonderful - my favorite part. I read some other reviews were people complained that it was small but I LOVED it. It was secluded and beautiful - light sand, black lava rock, and the views! I much preferred the Fairmont beach to Ka'anapali later in the week. It was very peaceful and private. We snorkeled right off the beach and saw the best turtles of the trip. We rented our gear from Snorkel Bob’s (much cheaper than the resort) and kept it all week.
Only other negative for this resort are the food prices. REALLY expensive!! I was expecting expensive but $22 for an omelet is out there, especially when you are a family of 4 and there for 9 days. We only ate one meal at Café Ciao on our last night. It was good but nothing life-changing for the high price. We bought groceries (which are expensive enough) and ate breakfast and a lot of lunches on our own. We also ate in several restaurants off the resort in Wailea and Kihei. Resort cocktails were $12-$16 a piece. We had a few then bought our own at the ABC store. However, I did think the coffee from the resort coffee shop was reasonably priced and very good.
I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Example: when I called for extra pillows they were at my door in minutes. When my child got sick at 12:30 am one night (yuck) I called the front desk and they had fresh linens at my door in minutes, removed the soiled ones, and even offered to come in and make up the bed. The gentleman was very gracious and didn’t make me feel bad.
We did have trouble accessing the internet in our room. It was a free service as members of the Fairmont club, but we were never able to get it to work (could be on our end) but we were able to access it in the outdoor bar area via WIFI.
Overall, this really is a grand hotel. I would stay here again and recommend it to anyone. Wailea is lovely and felt like pure paradise. As mentioned, I liked South Maui a bit more than West but the whole island is great. I mean it is Hawaii after all! A bad day there is better than a good day almost anywhere. So if you are stressing over choosing a resort, don’t. Every one I saw looked amazing so it would be hard to go wrong.
Aloha! :)
