Since Montserrat is a small pear-shaped island measuring 12 miles by 7 miles, transportation is not too difficult. In fact, perhaps one of the best ways to explore is by foot as restaurants and main venues largely remain in the same vicinity. However, Montserrat is also an ideal island to explore and hike and adventure. Thus, at times, it may be beneficial to hire a taxi for a day or rent a car for a day (note: taxi and travel companies are listed in the “Arriving and Departing” section).

One thing to note is that since the eruption of Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills volcano in the South of the island, this side of the island has endured an evacuation and relocation of residents beyond the Exclusion Zone.   This exclusion zone is dangerous and is illegal to enter.   In fact, Soufriere Hills continues to erupt, however, it is with ease and is very steadly monitored by scientists in the Volcano Observatory. However, tourists should not try to come near this zone. The boundary for the Exclusion Zone is from Plymouth and southwards to St. Patrick's through Windy Hill and Harris and down to the east coast at the site of W. H. Bramble Airport.
