Copper Canyon is a fairly safe place to visit.  Having said this, there are certain precautions that should be taken in order to ensure a smooth trip through the Chihuahua state of Northern Mexico.  Like always, common sense is the most important tool to be used in staying safe.

Although petty theft and crime are not of major concerns in the Copper Canyon area, they do happen.  However, these rare situations can be avoided by taking a few simple precautions.  Avoid sticking out by wearing expensive jewelry, showing lots of cash, or looking flashy.  Drawing un-needed attention is never a good idea.  Always lock car doors and roll up windows if leaving behind valuables in a vehicle.

Avoid walking alone at night (especially women).  If staying with a group is not an option and walking alone is unavoidable, try to remain in lighted, public areas.

Many people who visit the area do so because of the wealth of outdoor activities.  If planning on hiking into the canyons, especially for multiple days, make sure to prepare properly.  Check out this Wilderness Safety page before heading into the backcountry.

Although there are no foreign embassies located in Copper Canyon, most countries have a location somewhere in Mexico.   For a complete list, including contact and location information, visit this Embassies List .
