Baru Volcano National Park will make an enjoyable day trip in Boquete. The park's main features are the tropical rainforest and the volcano and the remains of its last eruption that gives the uniqueness to the landscape.
Travelers can walk the trails (Los Quetzales is one of the most popular ones) in the rain forest and admire some of the region's unique birds. Travelers can also go to the top of the volcano. You can drive a 4x4 behicle or you can walk to the top, it is a 45-minute drive or a four-hour walk. As you ascend, you will see the remains of the blast and admire the agricultural lands where coffee is grown. The traveler can visit the farms or attend the coffee fairs organized in downtown.
From the top, you can see both oceans. The view is breathtaking. Remember to take a coat as it can be quite cold due to altitude and humidity.
The park also gives travelers the opportunity to raft or canoe along the mountainous rivers. Several outfitters in Boquete also offer whitewater rafting trips to the various rivers in the area, like the Chiriqui Viejo, Chiriqui, and Esti Rivers. These rivers have class 2, 3 and 4 rapids, and you can select a trip based on your level of skill.
Additionally, in Boquete you can do several hiking/tree trek type trips. The tree trek is an activity where you are taken to the top of and old growth forest, then attached to steel cables onnected between trees. You slide down the cables on a pulley, speed controlled by your hand in a leather gloves, to the next tree. There are 16 cables between the top and the end, which is an nice coffeehouse, at which stronger beverages are available.
